Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to the last sale two weeks ago: Yearling steers 800 lbs to 849 lbs were $4.00 to $6.00 higher, steers from 850 lbs to 999 lbs were steady with instance of $2.00 higher, yearling heifers 750 lbs to 950 lbs were steady to $4.00 lower. These were the only comparisons available in the yearling market. The steer calves from 400 lbs to 500 lbs were $10.00 to $15.00 lower, while the heifer calves were generally $15.00 to $20.00 lower. Several strings of yearling coming off dry pasture, with many consignments of tested open heifers and fall calves made up the majority of today's sale. There were several consignments of spring calves from reputation producers at today's sale as well. The yearling market was active today as most were desirable and in light flesh condition coming off dry grass. There were several long strings of yearling offered for today's sale with up to nine loads from one consigner in the same sort. Lots of tested open replacement heifers were offered today as producers culled unnecessary livestock. Overall pasture conditions in the area remain short and dry. Several reputation consignments of spring born calves were offered today, most were fully preconditioned including one consignment of calves that had been weaned for two weeks A tougher market on the calves as many producers are beginning fall harvest and not ready for calves at this time. Next feeder sale will be October 1st. Stay safe and eat beef.
