Compared to last week steers under 600 lbs there was not a good test, however a lower undertone was noted. Steers over 600 lbs sold mostly lower. Steers 600 to 650 lbs sold 3.00 lower and steers 750 to 850 lbs sold 2.00 to 4.00 lower and steers 850 to 1000 sold 5.00 to 7.00 lower. The 650 to 700 lb steers sold 4.00 higher and 700 to 750 lb steers sold steady. On the heifers no test under 500 lbs, 500 to 550 lb heifers sold 6.00 higher, 550 to 650 and 850 to 900 lb heifers sold steady. Heifers 650 to 850 lbs sold 2.00 to 5.00 lower. The supply was moderate and the demand was moderate.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
