Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 5 Colorado auction markets included: Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, Sterling Livestock, Livestock Exchange and Centennial Livestock. Trade activity and demand moderate to good. Feeder steers under 600 lbs sold mostly 1.00 to 5.00 lower, 600-850 lbs mostly steady to 3.00 higher, and over 800 lbs mostly 5.00 to 7.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs sold uneven, 500-750 lbs steady to 6.00 lower, and over 750 lbs lightly tested, trading 4.00 higher. Feeder dairy heifers weighing 850-1250 lbs sold 1.00 to 3.00 higher with instances of 8.00 to 9.00 higher. Average dressing slaughter cows and bull sold steady to 2.00 lower. The next available report will be Monday, November 28, 2022.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
