Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 5 Colorado auction markets included: Centennial Livestock, Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, Sterling Livestock, and Livestock Exchange. Trade activity and demand moderate to good. Feeder steers under 600 lbs sold mostly 1.00-5.00 higher with those under 350 lbs selling sharply higher. Feeder steers over 600 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs sold mostly steady to 5.00 lower with the exception of some firmness noted in those weighing 350-400 lbs. Feeder heifers over 500 lbs sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher with the exception of some weakness noted in those weighing 800-850 lbs. Beef/dairy crossbred steers and heifers sold unevenly. Holstein steers under 700 lbs sold 2.00-6.00 lower, and dairy feeder heifers under 700 lbs sold 2.00-6.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold mostly 1.00-4.00 lower and slaughter bulls sold steady to 1.00 lower. Bred cow offerings were mostly in the 1st and 2nd trimester. USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
