Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves 300-550 lbs sold 2.00-6.00 higher while 550-600 lbs were 10.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 9.00 higher and 650-700 lbs were 1.00 lower while 700-750 lbs were 9.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs were 2.00 lower and 350-450 lbs sold sharply higher while 450-600 lbs were 1.00-2.00 lower instances sharply lower. Feeder heifers 650-700 lbs sold 6.00 higher. Trade was moderately active on an uneven market with higher numbers. Slaughter cows were steady and slaughter bulls sold steady to 1.00 higher. Demand was moderate with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
