Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale, steer calves 350-400l bs were 2.00 lower and 400-450 lbs sold 15.00 lower; 450-500 lbs were 6.00 higher while 500-600 lbs sold steady to 10.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs were 3.00-5.00 higher and 750-800 lbs sold 9.00 lower. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs sold sharply lower and 400-500 lbs were 3.00-10.00 lower while 500-600 lbs sold 16.00-21.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were sharply lower and 700-750 lbs sold 11.00 lower. Trade was moderate on smaller numbers with moderate demand. Slaughter cows were 1.00-4.00 lower and slaughter bulls sold 2.00-3.00 lower. Excellent buyer attendance with a moderately lower market.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
