Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; steer calves 300-350 lbs were 10.00 higher than last week , 350-400 lbs were 15.00 lower and 400-450 lbs were 3.00 lower while 450 - 500 lbs were 2.00 higher; 500-600 lb steer calves were steady to 4.00 lower than last week Heifer calves 350-450 lbs were 4.00-12.00 higher; 450-500 lbs sold 5.00 lower than last week while 500-550 lbs were 8.00 lower. 550-600 lbs were 4.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 9.00 higher and 650-700 lb were15.00 higher; 700-800 lbs sold steady to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 14.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold 3.00 higher. 700-750 lbs were steady to 4.oo higher. Slaughter cows and bulls were had insignificant numbers to compare. Trade was active, demand was good on slightly higher numbers. Excellent selection of pairs and bred cows due to a ranch dispersal.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
