Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves under 600 lbs were lightly tested, mostly unweaned with a few groups of 600-615 lb steers trading fully steady on same weight with last week's offering and 700-750 lb steers selling unevenly steady; over 750 lbs had a pot load weighing 798 lbs and pot load weighing 913 lbs with several other small groups all trading with a lower undertone. Heifer calves were lightly tested with one group of 536 lb heifers trading steady with last week and heifers over 600 lbs sold with a lower undertone. Demand was moderate to good on a light to moderate offering. Hot temperatures for the week to be mostly in the mid to upper 90's. Slaughter cows mostly average to low dressing traded steady with last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
