Compared to the last auction, no recent comparisons with the last reported sale with comparable numbers been 4 weeks ago. Feeder cattle of all weights sold with a lower to sharply lower undertone as feeder market has come under pressure with fed cattle market losing near 35.00 since the highs at the end of June/1st of July and trading mostly from 225.00-227.00 in the North last week, along with plant closings (Joslin, IL) and lower futures all pressuring the market. There were ten pot loads with several stick out sales including pot load 748 lb steers at 348.00; 120 steers weighing 853 lbs at 335.00, 57 steers weighing 1042 lbs at 294.00 with 75 heifers weighing 579 lbs at 377.00 and 85 heifers weighing 647 at 357.75. What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
