Compared to last week, 400-450 lb steer calves sold 6.00-12.00 higher, with 450-600 lb trading firm to 5.00 higher, 600-700 lb steers sold steady on comparable weights and quality with over 700 lbs not tested with last week. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher with 500-600 lbs trading steady to 5.00 higher with the most advance on the 500-550 lb heifers, over 600 lbs were lightly tested. Demand was good especially on the 400-600 lb steer calves 350-550 lb heifers with overall quality very good on these calves. Slaughter cows sold steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
