Compared to last week, 400-500 lb steer calves sold with a sharply higher undertone on a larger offering than last week, 500-550 lbs sold steady to firm, with 550-600 lbs trading 5.00-8.00 higher, 600-700 lbs steers sold steady to 5.00 higher, with over 700 lbs scarce. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs and 550-600 lbs sold steady to firm with 500-550 lbs selling with a steady to higher undertone on last week's light test, and 600-655 lbs traded with a higher undertone on mostly a yearling offering with last week's offering mostly calves, 700-755 lbs sold with a firm undertone on few comparisons. Demand was good on a moderate supply, with the best demand on the good quality offering of 400-650 lb steers that were long timed weaned with shots sold on and active market as did the 600-650 lb heifers. Several stick out sales included 43 head of steers weighing 586 lbs at 311.00 and 33 steers weighing 606 lbs at 301.00. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
