Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week, steer calves under 700 lbs and heifer calves under 600 lbs overall were lightly tested with several groups of 500-550 lb steers selling 5.00-7.00 lower and several groups of 550-600 lb heifers trading steady to 5.00 lower all other weights of calves were not well tested as numbers and overall quality of calves were not as deep as last week's offering. Pot load of steers weighing 791 lbs sold with a firm undertone, two pot loads and a part load of 865-900 lb steers sold firm to 2.00 higher. Two pot loads of 609-626 lb heifers sold with a firm undertone with a pot load of 744 lb heifers selling 2.00 lower than last week's two pot loads of similar weight. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate offering. Stick out sales included the two pot loads 6 weight heifers with pot load weighing 626 lbs at 271.25 and pot load weighing 609 lbs at 276.10. Slaughter cows on a nice offering sold firm to 3.00 higher.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
