Compared to last week, feeder steers weighing 400-700 lbs sold steady to firm, spots on the 5 weight steers sold 2.00-4.00 higher, with yearling steers over 750 lbs selling with a firm to higher undertone with no recent comparisons on the pot loads and part loads. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold 10.00-12.00 higher, with 500-650 lbs trading steady to firm, over 650 lbs traded with a firm undertone. Demand was good on a moderate offering with a good quality offering of calves and yearlings. There was eight pot loads of yearling steers and heifers with several part loads in the mix with several stick out sales included pot load 640 lb steers at 288.00, pot load 675 lb steers at 286.60, pot load 863 lb steers at 244.00. Slaughter cows sold on and active market with a good offering of high yielding cows selling firm to 5.00 higher with the most advance on the high dressing cows.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
