Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week, steer calves under 550 lbs were lightly tested and sold with a firm to higher undertone, 550-600 lbs sold steady, with over 600 lbs selling mostly in pot loads, part loads and groups traded steady on comparable weights and quality. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone on few comparable sales, 500-600 lbs sold firm to 5.00 higher, with the most advance on the 550-600 lb heifers, 600-750 lbs traded steady to firm. Demand was good on a moderate supply. There was one consignment of near 300 head of steers all selling with good weighing conditions that consisted of pot load thin steers 575 lbs at 313.60, pot load 640 lbs at 294.50, pot load thin 822 lbs 250.00; three pot loads of steers weighing 877-891 lbs sold from 240.75-242.75. Much needed rain fell throughout the trade area over the weekend into Monday providing relief and improved pasture conditions. Slaughter cows sold 4.00-7.00 lower.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
