Compared to last week, steers under 700 lbs sold steady to firm, spots 2.00 higher on the 6 weight steers with yearling steers over 700 lbs trading 4.00-7.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs were lightly tested with 700-750 lb heifers selling with a higher undertone. Demand was good on a moderate supply with best demand on the top quality pot loads of yearling steers over 700 lbs. There was 7 pot loads of top quality 860-987 lb steers with 3 pot loads weighing 860-898 lbs at 241.60-243.75, 2 pot loads weighing 909-938 lbs both at 235.75, and 112 head weighing 987 lbs selling at 231.10. Good demand for these big yearling steers remains very good with a bumper corn crop on the horizon is helping to support the market. Slaughter cows traded mostly steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
