Market comments — USDA reporter

Monday's sale featured an 800 head consignment of top quality/reputation home raised calves along with several consignments of pot loads, strings and large groups of top quality calves and yearlings with good weighing conditions as quality ran very deep on Monday's auction as these consignments sold with sharply higher undertones with few comparisons from the sale three weeks ago on the large groups. Comparable sales of 400-550 lb steers sold fully steady to firm, 550-700 lbs sold 5.00-12.00 higher and heifers weighing 400-650 lbs traded 5.00-15.00, spots 20 higher. Demand was very good on a moderate to heavy supply. Stick out sales were numerous with a pot load (100 hd) fancy 520 lb steers at 388.75, pot load 585 lbs steers at 358.00, pot load 606 lb steers at 341.50, pot load 711 lb steers at 306.85 and pot load 840 lb steers at 266.10. Heifer sales included pot load (100 hd) 527 lbs at 329.50, 66 hd for replacement 546 lbs 338.00, pot load 621 lbs at 306.50. Slaughter cows sold on a very active market selling mostly 7.00-13.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
