Compared to last week's much larger offering, other than 4 pot loads of 845-965 lb steers and 2 pot loads of 613 and 732 lb heifers the steer and heifer calves were lightly tested with the best test and it was a light test on 550-600 lb steers and 500-550 lb heifers both trading mostly 20.00 lower than last week as calves sold mostly in small groups and packages, the 3 pot loads of 845-850 lb steers sold 10.00-13.00 lower than last week's pot load of 877 lb steers, with the pot load of 967 lbs not tested. The pot load of 613 lb heifers sold 20.00 lower than last week's top on the 600-650 lb heifers and the pot load of 732 lb heifers sold 13.00 lower than last week's pot load of similar weight and quality. All other weights on a light test sold with a lower undertone. After last week's CME cattle futures melt down, Monday's feeder cattle market caught up with the last week's sharply lower market as the week went on. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-5.00 lower. There was a consignment of bred cows mostly 4-6 yrs 1150-1440 lbs mostly in the 3rd stage sold from 1535.00-1685.00 per head.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
