Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-600 lbs sold steady to firm, with spots 5.00 higher on the 5 weight steers, 600-800 lbs were not tested with last week, pot load of 877 lb steers sold near a 1.00 higher of similar weight and quality as last week. Feeder heifers weighing 400-450 lbs sold with a steady to firm undertone on last week's light test with 450-500 lbs selling 5.00-7.00 higher and 500-600 lbs trading steady to 5.00 higher, over 600 lbs were not well tested with last week. Demand was moderate to good on a heavy offering with a nice quality offering of steers and heifer calves with several pot loads of yearling steers and heifers weighing 675 to 877 lbs. CME cattle futures started the week sharply lower with most months for both Live cattle and Feeder Cattle trading with triple digit losses of over 3.00, despite the sharp losses feeder cattle market held up very well. Slaughter cows the heavy weight cows-breaking cows sold sharply lower mostly 6.00-12.00 lower with boning and lean cows selling steady to 5.00 lower with the most decline on the boners.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
