Compared to last week, the best test on steer calves was on the 500-600 lb and a few light weight 400 lb steers selling mostly 5.00-15.00 lower, with 6 weights lightly tested, two pot loads of 888-893 lb steers sold 1.50-4.00 lower than last week's pot load of similar weight and quality with two pot loads and a part load of 733-805 lb steers trading with a weak to lower undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold with a sharply lower undertone with overall quality not as attractive as last week, 500-600 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 lower, spots 12.00 lower with most decline on the 550-600 lbs, a pot load of 638 lb heifers sold steady at 259.10 with last week's part load, with over 700 lbs not well tested. Demand was light to moderate on calves with moderate to good demand on the yearlings. CME Cattle futures saw heavy losses as Live Cattle futures on the front 4 months closed 602-670 lower and Feeder Cattle futures from November thru March closed 642-735 lower as wide spread pressure from last Friday's Cattle on Feed Report had sharply higher Placements at 106 percent (well above expectations) and sharply lower Marketings at 89 percent were both very bearish for the cattle futures and pressured feeder cattle market. Slaughter cows on a large offering sold steady with last week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
