Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 450-550 lbs sold fully steady to firm, with 550-600 lbs not well tested with last week's light test but sold with a higher undertone, 600-650 lb steers sold 5.00-10.00 higher, with a part load of 715 lb steers and a pot load of 890 lb steers selling with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold with a higher undertone, with 500-550 lb heifers selling mostly 5.00-10.00 higher and 550-600 lb selling with a higher undertone on a light test and over 600 lbs sold steady to firm on comparable sales. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate offering with the best demand on the 550-650 lb steers. Market overall had a better feel this week as buyers were more aggressive to buy and own feeders on Monday as last week's fed cattle market was higher. Slaughter cows on a large offering sold steady to firm with several premium white cows selling with a higher undertone.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
