Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs were lightly tested, with 500-550 lb steers selling 2.00-5.00 lower, 550-600 lbs sold 5.00-8.00 lower, spots 10.00 lower, 600-650 lbs sold mostly 5.00 lower and over 650 lbs were not well tested with a part load of 713 lb steers selling with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-600 lbs sold steady to firm, over 600 lbs were lightly tested with the exception of a pot load of top quality 605 lb heifers selling with a higher undertone. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate offering there was a couple of stick-out sales with a pot load of 605 lb heifers at 285.75 and a part load 713 lb steers at 279.75. The offering of light weight calves under 400 lbs was greater than normal and sold with good demand. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
