Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-600 lbs sold steady to firm, with 600-700 lbs selling firm to spots 5.00 higher and over 750 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Heifer calves on a much lighter offering this week sold steady. Demand was good on all classes of feeders with supply moderate. Several stick-out sales of yearling steers with a pot load of thin black steers weighing 662 lbs at 296.25 and three pot loads of top quality yearling steers weighing 906 to 943 lbs all selling with good demand with the pot load of 906 lb steers selling at 251.10. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady with the bulk of the slaughter cows average dressing cows.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
