Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs and 600-650 lbs sold mostly steady to 5.00 lower with 500-600 lbs selling steady to 8.00 lower, spots 10.00 lower on the 500-550 lb steers, over 650 lbs were lightly tested. Feeder heifers weighing 400-450 lbs and 500-600 lbs selling steady to 5.00 lower with 450-500 lbs trading mostly steady, over 600 lbs were lightly tested. Demand was moderate to good with supply heavy. Feeders weighing 400-600 lbs still sold on a very active market just not reaching last week's highs as overall kind, quality and condition were not as attractive as last week on the 500-600 lb steer calves with several pot loads of 600-650 lb steer calves and a near pot load of 818 lb yearling steers still sold on a very active market. Light rain fell throughout the trade area, but dry conditions still remain for the most part. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
