Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-600 lbs sold fully steady to firm with last week's very active market, 600-700 lbs traded 5.00-8.00 higher and over 700 lbs were lightly tested. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady to firm, spots 3.00 higher on the 400-450 lbs, 500-600 lb heifers sold 5.00-8.00 higher with 600-700 lbs selling with a sharply higher undertone on few comparable sales over 700 lbs were not tested. Demand was good on a heavy offering of feeders with a very active market on 400-650 lb feeders. Several stick-out sales of 6 weight steers and heifers with a couple of pot loads and groups of attractive steers and heifers with good weighing conditions, overall a very good quality offering of calves as buyers could put together strings of feeders. Slaughter cows sold firm to 3.00 higher with most advance on the high dressing cows.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
