Compared to last week, steer calves had the best test on 500-550 lbs selling steady to 3.00 lower, with steer calves weighing 400-650 lbs very lightly tested on a light offering with weights over 650 lbs scarce. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs were not well tested on a light offering with two pot loads of 670 and 780 lb heifers trading with a steady to firm undertone. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 lower. Demand was moderate on a moderate supply with overall quality mostly average to good on calves with the best demand on the two pot loads of heifers. Cattle futures started the week in the green with Live cattle futures having triple digit gains with the front three months 112-170 higher. December corn closed 2 3/4 cents lower with November and January soybeans closing 23 1/2 and 23 1/4 cents lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
