Compared to last week, a much lighter test and offering of steer and heifer calves weighing 400-600 lbs, with 4 weight steer calves selling steady to firm and 500-550 lb trading steady to 3.00 lower on a light test and 550-800 lbs not well tested on light offerings with three pot loads of 850-930 lb steers selling with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold with a lower undertone on a light offering with 500-600 lbs selling 2.00-5.00 lower and over 600 lbs not well tested. Slaughter cows sold 2.00-4.00 lower on mostly average and low dressing cows. Demand was moderate to good, best on the three pot loads of yearling steers weighing 850-930 lbs and a pot load of 730 lb heifers. Feeder Cattle contracts closed 95 to 215 higher on the front three months with Live Cattle contracts up 92 to 142 on the front three months and December corn closing 6 1/4 cents lower to start the week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
