Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady to firm, with 550-550 lbs selling steady to 2.00 lower on last week's very active market, 550-700 lbs sold steady with 700-800 lbs trading steady to 3.00 higher, and over 800 lbs sold steady. Feeder heifers weighing 450-600 lbs sold 3.00-5.00 higher, 600-650 lbs sold steady. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm, spots 2.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate to heavy supply. Monday's auction had a nice offering of good quality calves and several pot loads of 800-950 lb yearling steers selling with good demand.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
