Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold with a higher undertone with last week's light test, 500-600 lb steers sold firm to 5.00 higher, with 600-650 lbs selling firm to 3.00 higher, 650-700 lbs were mostly yearlings and sold with a higher undertone as last week's offering was mostly calves, 700-750 lbs sold steady with 750-800 lbs trading steady to 3.00 lower and weights over 800 lbs not tested. Feeder heifers sold steady with the exception of 500-600 lb heifers selling steady to 5.00 higher. Lot of good top quality calves in Monday's offering as overall quality was better this week and selling in larger consignments and groups with the bulk weighing 450-700 lbs trading on and active market. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
