Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last sale (4-9-26): Feeder cattle were all too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend however higher undertones were noted on feeder steers and bulls, while steady to lower undertones were noted on feeder heifers. Demand was mostly good for light offerings. Feeders were offered in mostly small packages or as singles. Quality this week was mostly plain to average. Weigh up cows and bulls sold on good to very good demand for heavier offerings. Slaughter cows sold uneven; leans and breakers sold 4.00 to 8.00 lower, while boners sold 6.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold 3.00 lower. Feeding cows and bulls overall sold 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Young age offerings suitable to feed or rebreed comprised a large portion of the sale this week. Buyers were willing to take up to middle age cows to turn out and rebreed. Young cow offerings were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Quality this week was mostly average to attractive.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
