Compared to last week: Yearling steers and heifer were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady undertones were noticed on steers and higher undertones were noticed on heifers on a higher quality offering. Steer calves under 600 lbs sold mostly 5.00-20.00 lower. Steer calves over 600 lbs sold unevenly steady from 7.00 lower to 8.00 higher. Heifer calves all sold steady to 10.00 lower. Demand was uneven this week. Quality was plain to average with a very limited offering of attractive cattle. Quality was much lower compared to last weeks very attractive offering. Package sizes were mostly small to medium this week. Many sets of short weaned cattle were seen this week and these offerings were met with very light demand. Most short weaned calves looked stressed or on the verge of sick. Market activity was mostly moderate this week. Weigh up cows sold on mostly light to moderate demand and offerings. Slaughter cows were too lightly tested to develop a full market trend, steady undertones were noticed. Most cows were purchased to feed for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. These cows were most thin and would normally go to slaughter. Feeding cows sold with steady undertones. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold steady in a narrow comparison. The best demand continues to be for high quality rebreed type cows.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
