Compared to two weeks ago: Last sale feeder receipts were very light so no accurate market comparisons can be made. Lower undertones were seen on steers and steady to weak undertones were noted on heifers. Heifer quality was mostly average to attractive, while steer quality was mostly plain to average. Dry conditions have pushed some replacement heifers to market. Buyers looking for high quality grass cattle showed good demand for these offerings. A limited amount of heifers sold as replacements this sale. Flesh conditions were mixed today with most cattle under 750 lbs in light flesh, while most cattle over 750 lbs were in moderate to moderate plus flesh, with a few fleshy cattle on offer as well. Demand overall was moderate for moderate to heavy offerings. Demand was strong early in the sale as several ranchers were in the stands actively bidding on offerings. Demand diminished as these buyers filled loads. Market activity was mostly moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on mixed demand for light offerings. Packers showed lighter demand for slaughter cows this sale and feeding buyers continue to pass on older and thinner cows. Slaughter cows sold mostly 1.00-3.00 lower. Feeding cows sold on mostly good demand this sale as packers showed good demand for high quality young cows. Feeding cows sold generally steady. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 1.00-2.00 lower. Weigh up conditions were mostly below average this sale as cows sold late in the day and many were pushing heavy amounts of fill. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold mostly 6.00-10.00 lower. Demand to feed these offerings has lightened as corn and other feed cost have risen sharply over the last few weeks.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
