Compared to last week steers less than 700 lbs sold steady to 6.00 lower. Heifers less than 700 lbs sold 3.00 to 10.00 higher. No test last week on weights over 700 lbs. Slaughter cows sold 5.00 to10.00 higher and bulls steady. Demand was good for stocker cattle, bred cattle and slaughter cows. The end of next week December 20, will close out the auction reporting in Wyoming. With this, cow buyers were aggressively buying slaughter cows and more than likely will do the same next week. Most auctions will be shut down over a two-week period until the first full week of the new year.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
