Compared to last week steers under 500 lbs sold 7.00 to 8.00 lower, 500 to 700 lbs sold 4.00 to 6.00 higher, 700 to 900 lbs sold unevenly steady and over 900 lbs sold 9.00 lower. Heifers under 500 lbs sold 10.00 lower, over 500 lbs sold 4.00 to 9.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold 2.00 to 5.00 lower and slaughter bulls sold 5.00 lower. As we get in the fall run ranchers are preg checking cows and sending the open ones to town to save on winter feed cost. Looking at the weekly reports many packers are planning and putting cows on feed. Plus, some of the younger cows are headed back for recip or rebreeding.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
