Compared to last week steers under 800 lbs sold steady over 800 lbs sold 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Heifers under 500 lbs sold 2.00 to 3.00 lower, 500 to 700 lbs sold 5.00 to 8.00 higher and over 700 lbs sold 2.00 to 6.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold steady to 4.00 lower. Bred cows sold steady to 200.00 per head higher. Bred heifers 100.00 per head higher. Demand was moderate to good. Majority of the bred cows and heifers headed to out of state buyers. Another week of large supply of slaughter cows hitting the market. About every week for the last several months there has been over 2000 head of cull cows getting shipped from ranches. This large number doesn’t include the bred cows leaving the ranch.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
