Compared to last week, steer calves under 500 lbs sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher, 500 to 700 lbs sold steady to 2.00 lower and over 700 lbs sold mostly steady to 6.00 higher. Heifer calves sold under 700 lbs sold unevenly steady with 800 lbs yearlings 2.00 higher on the week. Boning and lean cows sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher with slaughter bulls 10.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good for calves, slaughter cows with good demand for the short supply of yearling feeders. Quite a few young cows and tested open two-year-old heifers returning to the country. Along with some middle-aged cows going to stalk fields.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
