Compared to last week steers sold 2.00 to 3.00 lower excepts 800 lbs steers sold 3.00 higher. Heifers under 500 lbs sold 6.00 lower, over 500 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher. Demand was good for long time weaned calves and feeder cattle with moderate to good demand for slaughter cattle. Runs a tick shorter than expected due to the cold and snow in some areas of the state. With calving just around the corner, not as many slaughter cows are coming to town. Moderate to heavy snow at higher elevations with light snow from Riverton to Powel and a foot or so on the eastern side of the state. Wyoming NRCS week snow report shows the median has increased to 93% up from 89% last week with basin high of 109% in Yellowstone and basin low of 21% in the South Platte. Last year, this week, the state median was 119 % and in 2019 was at 104%.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
