Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

*** Final Report *** Compared to last week, feeder steers 700 lb to 900 lb sold steady. Not enough feeder steers 900 lb to 1,000 lb for a market test, however a higher trend was noted. No recent comparison on steer calves 400 lb to 700 lb, however a higher trend was noted especially on thin fleshed and weaned calves. Unweaned calves sold at a 20.00 discount. Not enough feeder heifers 600 lb to 950 lb for a market test, however a lower trend was noted. No recent comparison on heifer calves 400 lb to 600 lb , however a higher trend was noted, especially on weaned and thin fleshed heifers. Unweaned heifer calves sold at a 15.00 discount. Demand was moderate, however demand was good on weaned and thin fleshed calves. Outstanding offering of native calves. Slaughter cows and bulls sold 6.00 to 8.00 lower.
