Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last Tuesday (October 22nd) steer calves under 500 lbs 6.00-13.00 higher, instances 23.00-36.00, over 500 lbs mostly steady with 600-645 lbs instances 17.00 higher. Heifer calves under 500 lbs 9.00-11.00 higher instances 22.00, over 500 lbs steady with 600-635 lbs instances 9.00 higher. Yearling heifers on a light offering under pressure with instances 4.00-10.00 lower. Demand good with good buyer attendance and participation. Most demand consisted mainly of preconditioned calves along with reputation quality packages.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
