Compared to last Tuesday on calf and yearling special; slaughter cows and bulls on a light offering mostly steady, feeder cows most advances on heiferettes, young steady instances 4.00-6.00 lower. Yearling steers steady instances 5.00-10.00 higher, yearling heifers mostly steady. Feeder steers reputation quality or preconditioned calves higher higher overtones noted with most advances on 400 lb steers instances 20.00-35.00 higher, others 5.00-14.00 only 400 lb steers under pressure. Heifer calves reputation quality higher over tones noted with calves under 550 lbs most advances 23.00-45.00 higher, others steady to 8.00-12.00 higher. Good demand with good buyer participation. Starting this Friday will be cow and bull sales thru fall season, mark the date: October 13 th.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
