Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last sale two weeks ago, steer calves under 700 lbs sold 10.00-20.00 higher, spots 25.00 higher on the 450-525 lbs steers and the heavier steers sold mostly steady except for a load of grass yearlings selling with a higher undertone but with no recent similar sales to compare to. Heifer calves under 500 lbs sold 20.00-25.00 higher and those over 500 lbs sold steady to 8.00 higher. Demand was good to very good except being moderate for the fleshier calves weighing 550-700 lbs. Despite large numbers of cattle currently on feed, the 2024 calf crop was historically small and there is fierce competition for the grazing type calves. Slaughter cows sold 2.00-3.00 lower than two weeks ago.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
