Market comments — USDA reporter
NOTE: Wheeler Livestock Auction will hold its monthly Special Cow sale this Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm. There will be 1300 + head in this sale, will a few herd dispersals and many consignments of fancy bred cows, bred heifers, cow/calf pairs and breeding bulls.
Compared to last week, feeder steers sold mostly steady to 10.00 higher with the lighter weight calves 400 to 450 wt going to grass selling with the most gains, as much as 20.00 and up. On the heifer side, lighter weight calves under 600 lbs sold from 5.00 lower to 15.00 higher, 6 to 700 lb heifers sold with a higher undertone, replacement type, selling with good demand 5.00 to 30.00 higher. The supply was moderate with good demand overall. Slaughter cows traded mostly steady and the slaughter bulls were also selling steady except for the higher yielding bulls selling 2.00 to 4.00 higher.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
