Compared to last Thursday, stocker and feeder cattle steady to 5.00 higher. CME Feeder cattle led the way with the weakness in the grains, gaining 0.89% to 1.2% across the front months. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was $203.91, down by $2.32 on 4/19. Slaughter cows and bulls firm. Trade very active with good demand. USDA's weekly Export Sales data had 19,092 MT of beef bookings for the week that ended 4/13. That was a 9-week high led by South Korean business. The week's beef export was shown at 16k MT, which brought the year's total to 232,727 MT - compared to 271.1k MT last year.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
