No trends due to market not reported last week due to scheduling conflicts. Feeder cattle futures closed the day $0.95 to $1.92 higher, with March expiring at $192.40. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was $192.35 on 3/29. A higher undertone was noted on slaughter cows and bulls. Trade very active with very good demand. USDA's weekly Export Sales report showed 11,257 MT of beef was sold during the week that ended 3/23. That was down from 18.6k last week and from 23k MT during the same week last year. The week's export shipment was 16.5k MT for the week which brought the season's total to 183k MT.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
