Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last Thursday, Stocker and feeder cattle 2.00-7.00 higher. Quality more attractive this week as buyers were able to purchase larger lots. Buyer attendance was good. Feeder cattle futures closed Thursday $0.60 to $1.45 in the black. The April contract expired at $155.92 to be settled against the index. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was $156.36 on 4/27, up by another 15 cents. Slaughter cows 2.00-3.00 lower. Slaughter bulls steady. Trade active with good demand. Weekly Export Sales data from FAS showed a new year's low 11,396 MT of beef was sold during the week of 4/21. Beef exports were also down 16% from last week at 17,602 MT. YTD beef exports still outpace 2021 by 1.88% with 288,695 MT shipped through 4/21.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.
