Compared to last Thursday at the same market, not enough stocker or feeder cattle last for accurate trends. CME Feeder cattle grabbed more share with $1.05 to $1.70 gains due to double weakness in the corn CME price on Thursday. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was down another 20 cents on 1/12 to $162.01. Slaughter cows dairy type 6.00-7.00 lower. Beef type firm. Not enough slaughter bulls for accurate trends. Trade active with good demand on increased supplies. Beef export sales were 9,704 MT for the first week of the new year. 2021 shipments ended at a record 925,127 MT. Shipments so far this year are at 8,626 MT through the first week of data.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
