Compared to last Thursday at the same market, Stocker steers less than 700 lbs 3.00-4.00 lower. Feeder steers over 700 lbs firm. All heifers 6.00-7.00 lower. Feeders on the CME were higher nearby, gaining $1.15 in September, but were 27 to 40 cents red in the deferred months. The 9/14 CME Feeder Cattle Index was $154.20 after a 19-cent drop. Slaughter cows 2.00-3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls weak in a light test. Trade active with good demand. The weekly Export Sales report showed 15,339 MT of beef were booked during the week ending 9/9. That was up from 12k MT last week but 1.2% below the same week last year. Japan and South Korea were the week’s top buyers, as well as the top destinations for the 16,884 MT that were shipped on the week. Accumulated beef exports were 18% ahead of last year’s pace with 651,873 MT through 9/9.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
