Compared to last Thursday at the same market, not enough feeder cattle last week for accurate trends, however a higher undertone was noted for larger offerings. Quality was more attractive this week due to increased offerings. Thursday live cattle futures ended with losses of $0.40 to $1.15, led by in delivery August. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls weak. Trade active with good and good buyer attendance. Weekly Export Sales data showed beef bookings were 10,444 MT for the week that ended 8/19. That was down from 11k MT booked the previous week and was about half of the same week last season. Japan was the top buyer, as well as the top destination with 3,800 MT and 5,400 MT respectively. All beef shipments were 18,690 MT bringing the YTD total to 598,091 MT. That remains at record pace.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
