Compared to last week, steer calves under 550 lbs. had little comparison. The 550-650 lb. steers traded as much as 12.00 higher and the feeder steers over 650 lbs. sold with a higher undertone compared to a light test from last week. The largest drafts of the day included 72 hd. of 794 lb. steers that sold at 389.00/cwt., 183 hd. of 901 lb. steers that sold at 357.25/cwt., and 61 hd. of 917 lb. steers that sold at 353.25/cwt. The heifer calves sold mostly steady on a light test, and the feeder heifers were not well tested last week. Slaughter cattle traded 5.00 higher with spots 8.00 higher on the good high dressing cows and bulls.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
