Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, there was a moderate to heavy offering of good quality feeders today with high demand from the buyers throughout the sale. Overall, feeder steers were 4.00 to 12.00 higher, and feeder heifers were trading 5.00 to 10.00 higher with the 5-600 lbs heifers trading as much as 20.00 higher and up. Todays run represented reputation cattle that were higher quality weaned and vaccinated. Load lots and and larger drafts were: 73 Steers 737# 264.35; 65 Steers 819# 250.10; 63 Steers 610# 310.50; 73 Heifers 635# 255.50; 55 Heifers 650# 249.25; 42 Steers 553# 314.00; 78 Heifers 634# 257.00; 46 Heifers 451# 290.00. Slaughter Cows and Bulls traded steady to 3.00 higher

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
