Compared to two weeks ago, feeders under 700 lbs. sold 15.00 to 20.00 higher with some under 500 lbs. 25.00 higher. Feeders over 700 lbs. sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher on limited comparisons. The supply of feeders was moderate with most of the offering being average to slightly above on quality. Although quality is always desirable and not to take anything away from some of the reputation cattle in the offering, the calendar has buyers in the market for grazers currently and when this window opens each spring condition is everything. Today's offering was mostly moderate to light on flesh making them perfect to fill orders and any that have above average quality are kind of considered a bonus. Extremely nice weather for early February had most producers staying the barn only long enough to see their cattle sale, grab their checks and head back to the farm with a smile to enjoy the sunshine. The buying power was pretty stout with very active bidding and this carried over into the evening for a heavy supply of slaughter cows which sold 12.00 to 15.00 higher than the last auction. The cow offering was packed with high quality cows, several of which had seen more than just an old bale of fescue to eat and added up to dollar amounts that replacements would have had a hard time reaching just a short time ago.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
